Assessment of Farmers' Knowledge, Perceptions, Use Patterns, and Management Practices of Pesticides in Lalitpur District, Nepal

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate farmers' knowledge, perceptions, and practices related to pesticide use, including application methods, health impacts, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and storage and disposal practices. Study was conducted in two municipalities of the Lalitpur district, the experiment involved 80 randomly selected vegetable growers. Primary data were collected through questionnaires supplemented by various secondary sources. The findings revealed that most farmers relied heavily on chemical methods for pest control, with agro-vets being the primary source of technical guidance. Despite having good knowledge of proper pesticide use and awareness of its environmental and health impacts, this awareness did not consistently translate into safe practices. PPE usage during pesticide application was inadequate, and the disposal practices for leftover pesticides and empty containers posed significant risks to human health and the environment. Common acute health symptoms reported by farmers included headaches, skin itching, and dizziness.
These findings highlight the need for targeted interventions, such as improved training and extension services, to bridge the gap between farmers' knowledge and practices.
